This paper aimed at preparing nano-organomontmorillonite(nano-OMMT)with high basal spacing and excellent heat resistance property.Ca-montmorillonite,Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium Bromide(CTAB)and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate(SDS)were used to prepare cation organnomontmorillonite(MMT/CTAB)and cation-anion organomontmorillonite(MMT/CTAB/SDS),which are both with high basal spacing,with solution intercalation method.X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),contact angle tests,rotary viscosity test and turbidity test were used to characterize the structure and the properties of these new kinds of organnomontmorillonite(OMMT).Studies on the processing conditions and proposed modification mechanism of cation-anion OMMT were also researched.With the basal work above,a further study was also researched that to prepare nano-composites with the prepared nano-OMMT and polymer(PP and natural rubber).Research on the dispersion property of the nano-OMMT particles and the mechanical properties of polymer/montmorillonite nano-composites were investigated.The experimental results verified that MMT-CTAB can be prepared with Ca-montmorillonite and CTAB directly.The basal spacing is 4.05nm and the contact angle is 68.6°.Rotary viscosity test result indicates the cation OMMT can be used as a thickener and the viscosity of the product at the rotational speed of 6R/min is 1226mPa·s and thixotropy index of the product is 9.22.MMT/CTAB/SDS with high basal spacing,excellent heat resistance and disperson property was also prepared.The basal spacing of MMT/CTAB/SDS is 5.30nm.Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)showed the MMT/CTAB/SDS displayed excellent heat resistance property.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)analysis indicated that the MMT/CTAB/SDS shows excellent dispersion property and the plates with few silicate layers can be observed.Polymer/montmorillonite nanocomposites are prepared with rubber,PP and nano-OMMT.With the existence of MMT/CTAB/SDS(5%),the tensile strength of rubber increased by 29.4%,the flexural modulus of PP increased by 11.3%,and the tensile modulus of PP decreased by 10.6%.
