Vietnam is a developing country facing nationwide shortage of energy crisis. In this circumstance, energy consumption in Vietnamese housing has become an urgent issue.Because of rapid urban development and the large-scale migration to cities and housing demand formed,"new tube houses",of which design has a lot of shortcomings, can be seen everywhere. In the extreme hot and humid climate of Vietnam, those shortcomings have been magnified to the extreme, which not only lowers the quality of life but also consume a lot of energy.Passive design solution can help reduce energy consumption of buildings. Therefore, studying the passive energy-saving designs to create a more comfortable living space, adapt to local climate and reduce construction costs to minimize energy consumption is highly important. The scope of this study is "humid tropical climate of Vietnam",focusing on Vietnamese local tube house.Based on unique climate characteristics, geographical location and cultural features, the author has collected data, analyzed case studies, studied passive design strategy of cooling and insulation for tube houses, studied issues such as shading, sunlight and rain prevention, prevention of excessive heat to the building and increasing natural ventilation and lighting, thus proposing solutions. The first chapter introduces the formation and development of Vietnamese tube houses, then analyzes and compares tube houses' traditional model and new model, and concludes that "new tube houses" have lost the traditional characteristics and not well adapted to local climate and consumed more energy. The design is urgently in need of change and improvement to provide a more comfortable living space, adapt better to Vietnamese climate and save more energy. The second chapter mainly discusses the natural ventilation design strategy for Vietnamese tube houses in hot and humid climate. The paper seeks to explain natural ventilation design strategy of tube house in hot and humid areas by studying the spatial organization, layout and external structure. The third and the fourth chapters primarily discuss passive heat insulation design strategies in hot and humid climate for external structures of tube houses, explaining passive heat insulation design strategies by studying shading structure of windows, external structures(except doors and windows). The fifth chapter focuses on analyzing and summarizing case studies of tube houses in hot and humid climate.Through this study, the author expects to find a low-cost solution for buildings in hot and humid regions of Vietnam,to reduce energy consumption while still providing a comfortable living environment, and better adapted to humid tropical climate. This would contribute to the environment protection and energy consumption reduction in developing cities.
