The late 19th century and the early 20th century is called the progressive erain the United States."New women" who have achieved higher education are not satisfied with the traditional life, searching for the satisfactory to both family and career, but restricted to the age, women were excluded from the political, legal and other professional, so the "new woman" regarded social services field as a platform to fulfill their ambitions. During this period, the American public think that the doctor is the only legal childbirth caregivers, the hospital is the only labor safety place, by contrast, many trained midwives engaged in a large proportion of labor work in European countries, home delivery is also accepted by most people. In order to prove the midwife is an ideal candidate, Mary establish the frontier nursing service in Kentucky, hoping the agency can spread all over the United States, but it failed because of the Great Depression and the drought. Mary’s greatest contribution is establishing the Graduate School of Midwifery, which is still playing a big role now. this paper takes frontier nursing service as the breakthrough point, giving an detailed account of frontier nursing service’establishment and development process, displaying a objective truth of the Frontier Nursing Service to the readers.This article is divided into five parts to introduce Frontier Nursing Service’s development.The first part:introduction.
