Background and objectives Falls are easy happening events to make serious and terrible influence of health and life quality in elderly people. Current studies for the falls of aged are focused on the urban community-dwelling older population but not to pay close attention to the rural older people. Falls in the rural communities of the elderly are lack of relevant data. As a result, we aimed at investigating the incidence of falls among elderly farmers of MiYun county in Beijing. Methods Elderly farmers who lived in Jugezhuang town and Fengjiayu town of Miyun district were selected by using the cluster sampling. The information about the incidence of falls, epidemiological characteristics and the status of psychology and body were collected. Result 1.Incidence of falls:A total of 2397 samples including 967 males and 1430 females were analyzed. There were 347(14.5%) fallers. It was significant difference of incidence of falls between males(9.6%) and females(17.8%).The incidence of more than once falls was 7.4%.4.2% reported two or more falls for the man and 9.6% for the women. The total times of falls were 794.The average times of falls were 2.28±1.99.2.34±2.28 times for men and 2.27±1.89 times for women were counted.2. Location of falls:282 times falls were happened in the yard. In particular,45 times falls happened in the field/hilly area as a peculiar place of rural community.3. Injured parts of body:Among the fallers, 216(27.2%) times falls led to injuries. The most times of injuries to hip were 45 times falls. The incidence of fear of falling was 44.6% with 155 aged.4. Risk factors:Logistic regression models shows that strong contributing factors to fall were Exercise as protective factors. The odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for the exercise were 0.54(95%CI:0.33-0.89) among men and 0.77(95%CI:0.57-1.02) among women. Meanwhile, Abnormal TUG test, visual problem and stroke were the risk factors. The OR and 95%CI were 1.85(95%CI:1.06-3.20),3.23(95%CI:1.61-6.49) and 2.32(95%CI:1.33-4.05) for men,1.42(95%CI:1.01-2.01),1.50(95%CI:1.05-2.14) and 1.59(95%CI:1.07-2.35) for women. Among the man, the special factor of risk and the protective factor were mid cognitive impairment (1.91,95%CI:1.11-3.29) and high monthly income (0.51,95%CI:0.27-0.98).other significant variables were urinary incontinence (1.44,95%CI:1.08-1.91) for the risk factor as well as afternoon nap (0.71, 95%CI:0.52-0.95) as a protective factor among women. Conclusion the incidence of falls in the rural community-dwelling is relatively high with especial characteristics of its distribution, which results in serious consequences in the mental and physical health. Rural old people have their common influence factors, but also have its influence factors of different characteristics.
