ObjectiveTo examine effects of progressive muscle relaxation training on anxiety、depression and immune function in female breast cancer patients in peri-operational stage.MethodsA total of 68 patients were randomly allocated to the intervention group(n = 34)receiving progressive muscle relaxation training plus routine nursing care and the control group(n = 34)receiving routine nursing care. The intervention group were performed 25 min per session once a day in the evening, from the first day of admission to 4 weeks after the operation. The psychological state was assessed with Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS),and the immune function was assessed with immunoglobulins. The quality of life was assessed with Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy(FACT-B).Statistical analyses were based on analysis of covariance models for the individual changes from baseline to 4 weeks after the operation. The data was analyzed using SPSS 17.0.The descriptive statistics analysis,χ2 test,non-paraetric test and two independent sample t test were used.ResultsThere are 63 patients completed the research,32 in the control group and 31 in the intervention group. There was no statistical difference between two groups regarding on age, marital status, living status, degree of education, profession, income and so on.A general linear model with univariate analysis showed that the intervention group patients had significant improvements in anxiety 、depression and quality of life(49.19 ± 10.9 vs 38.35±4.91,P=0.000;51.06±10.75 vs 37.58±7.71,P=0.000;97.29±14.55 vs 110.68±5.68,P=0.001).But the control group patients had no significant improvement in anxiety 、depression and quality of life(49.72 ± 11.60 vs 45.22±7.01,P=0.065;50.03±11.54 vs 42.74±4.60,P=0.591;97.8±13.20 vs 99.34±9.98,P=0.207)after 5 weeks. The intervention group patients had significantly larger improvements in anxiety、depression and quality of life than those of the control group(38.35±4.91vs45.22±7.01,P=0.000;37.58±7.71vs42.74±4.60,P=0.000;110.68±5.68 vs 99.34±9.98,P=0.000)However,there is no statistical significance in immune function between the intervention group and the control group.ConclusionProgressive muscle relaxation training can improve anxiety, depression, and quality of life in female breast cancer patients in peri-operational stage.
