Objective:This survey was to investigate the occurrence and relevant characteristics of mental disorders among inpatients in a general hospital; to describe the demographics characters and distribution of these inpatients; to describe the recognition of the doctors in non-psychiatric departments of a general hospital; to explore relevant psycho-social factors of mental disorders and the use of mental health service.Method:This was a hospital based cross-sectional study. A cluster sampling method was used. Data collection was conducted among 597 intpatients fromnon-psychiatric departments from June to August in 2014 using the Mini international neuropsychiatry interview(MINI). Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed using SPSS 17.Results:1. The occurrence of mental disorders was 17.6%, including Depressive disorder(9.4%), Generalized anxiety disorder(3.7%), Dysthymia(1.7%), Suicidality(1.2%), Hypormanic episode(1.2%), Panic disorder(0.3%), Agoraphobia(0.5%), Socialphobia(0.2%), Obsessive-compulsive disorder(1.0%), Posttraumatic stress disorder(2.0%), Alcohol abuse and dependence(2.0%), Non-alcohol psychoactive substance use(0.5%), Psychotic disorder(0.7%), Anorexia nervosa(0.7%), Bulimia nervosa(0.2%), Antisocial personality disorder(0); The highest prevalence of four departments included : Gastroesophageal reflux disease(44.9%), Rehabilitation department(25.0%), The elderly ward(24.1%), Department of internal neurology(19.0%). 2. The results showed the risk factors, including the department, living style, history of mental illness, treatment will. 3. It was found that some inpatients in the general hospital had one more mental disorders. The most common condition was Depressive disorder combined with other mental disorders. 4. Lacking of knowledge of mental disorders, the utilization of mental health service was scarce among inpatients in the general hospital. According to the survey, we made the following conclusions. 1. It was noticeable that high prevalence of mental disorders was found in inpatients of a general hospital, and that low percentage of recognization they obtained. 2. The inpatients of internal medicine in a general hospital, who lived along, or had a history of mental disorders, or discriminated the psychopath, prone to sick with mental disorders. The inpatients with traumatic injury should eliminate PTSD. 3. In the general hospitals, psychiatry/psychology should be built, which will be a effct measure to improve recognization rate of he doctors in non-psychiatric and decrease the prevalence of inpatients. 4.The common condition was Depressive disorder, usually comorbiding with other mental disorders. 5. They were some measures to decrese the occurence of mental disorders, as strenthening the training of psychiatric symptomatology,offering education of health, and developing nursing mental. 6.With the poor using of mental service, mental health education and intervention should be needed and offered to inpatients in general hospitals, which could decrease the prevalence of mental disorders.
