Research background:With the development of society and nursing specialty, more and more male nurses take this position gradually. Enrollment of male nurses in various medical colleges is increasing year by year. From the social development and progressive trend of the times, Appearance of more and more male nurses is inevitable. However, the establishment and confirmation of nursing specialty are preconceived, and conventional, in addition with traditional values, social prejudice, professional features and other factors, so this special group of male nursing students are facing enormous social mental and social pressure of public opinion. Therefore, It is great important to probing into male nursing students'mental health and to promoting their physical and mental health.Research Purpose:To find the main problem by analyzing and evaluating mental health and its factors of male nursing students, compared with male medical students'mental health, to provide scientific basis for decision making of mental health education and mental health intervention in high nursing college.Research materials and methods:From the end of 2008 to October 2009, select all the boys 132 from one-year to five-year(including undergraduate nursing, ascending undergraduate nursing specialist nursing) in a nursing department of a medical university, and select 132 contemporary male medical students by stratified random sampling method, the total of the study object are 264.The measuring tools including:a table of general survey,symptom checklist(SCL-90),trait coping style questionnaire,social support rating scale and Eysenck personality questionnaire.Do statistical analysis by SPSS 13.0.Research results:1. Analysis of mental health of male nursing students:The single factor and Spearman correlation analyses indicated that:(1) There are some differences about male nursing students' mental health in education, professional interest, the source, whether the only child, and family economic status. Specialist male nursing students'mental health is worse than undergraduate,and the difference is not significant between undergraduate and ascending undergraduate and among different grades.(2) There has significant correlation in male nursing students' mental health symptoms, social prejudices and professional knowledge,and it has some different correlations in professional achievement and sense of belonging to groups.(3) There is statistically significant correlation among male nursing students' mental health symptoms and negative coping styles, availability of social support, neuroticism of personality characteristics, and covering latitudes. There is partial relation among positive response, objective support, subjective support, spiritual part of the quality and mental health symptoms.By multiple linear stepwise regression analysis we found that:the main influence factors of mental health including professional interests, academic record, social prejudice, sense of belonging, professional awareness, neuroticism, social support utilization, objective support, and negative coping.2. Evaluation of mental health of male nursing students:The study believed that:(1) The total and factor scores of male nursing students in SCL-90 are both higher than male medical students, especially in paranoia, interpersonal relationships, anxiety depression and mental illness factor. Compared with the national youth norm, the factor scores are higher except the two external factors somatization and hostility. (2)There overall detection rate is higher than that of male medical students, the light and moderate psychological problems were detected in 51.52% and 15.15%, and the mental issues are outstanding showed as obsessive, interpersonal sensitivity, spiritual, paranoid hostility, depression and other six parts. (3) Score of positive response and neuroticisme of male nursing students are higher than medical students, but the utilization of social support is lower.Conclusions and suggestions:Advanced male nursing students have lower level of mental health, and higher rate of mental disorders. Therefore their mental health is not optimistic. Their mental health is influenced by the social environment, schools, and other aspects, meanwhile, social prejudices, professional awareness, sense of belonging to groups are the most important factors. Higher nursing colleges should pay more attention to this special group of male nursing students, take various measures, and expand targeted health education to promote the development of their physical and mental health.
