As the popularity of internet and the widespread use of electronic devices in modern society, people are spending more time using their eyes to study and work. Myopia has become one of the leading factors that affect vision-related life. Thus, the prevention of myopia has gradually been a public health issue widely concerned in community at large. Particular attention shall be paid for school-age group who has not developed healthy eye care habits and whose eyes have not grown mature. Myopia will have negative influences on their life. It is quite an importance to prevent myopia as early as possible and help adolescents develop healthy eye care habits. Public health and education departments attach importance to myopia prevention and control by conducting numerous research and investigation in first-tier cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai. However, such research and investigation regarding myopia prevention and control is rarely conducted in the third and fourth-tier cities and rural areas. This research aims to investigate the situation of myopia and what has led to myopia in the third and fourth-tier cities and rural areas. By analyzing myopia cases within certain regions, the research will find out what eye care habits would result in myopia. The results will offer advisory for public health and education departments in making relevant policies to prevent and control myopia among students.The research methods include: 1. Find out myopia cases among pupils in downtown Handan through examinations on their eye conditions, including naked vision, corrected vision, autorefraction, etc. 2. Sampled pupils shall be handed out questionnaires, through which pupils’ eye care habits, glasses-wearing habits and awareness on myopia prevention shall be surveyed. 3. Through the above survey and questionnaire, identify vision conditions, myopia cases and awareness of myopia prevention of pupils in downtown Handan and in the meantime, study on the eye care habits that result in myopia. 4. Further explore and analyze the major eye care habits that would trigger myopia and make suggestions on developing healthy eye care habits for the prevention of myopia, in order to provide references for public health sectors of Handan to make policies for the prevention and control of myopia.The highlights of this research are as follows. 1. By using both sampling survey and questionnaire, the research combines subjective and objective survey methods to analyze and explore the myopia conditions of pupils in downtown Handan and the eye care habits that would lead to myopia. 2. When researching how myopia is affected by eye care habits, Survey data is input Microsoft Excel and data analysis is conducted by SPSS19.0. Logistic regression analysis is used for categorizing eye care habits, based on which, myopia conditions and eye care habits of pupils are analyzed.Conclusion: 1. Among the pupils in downtown Handan who suffer refractive error, those with myopia account for a majority. 30.89% of surveyed pupils are myopic. 27.2% are male and 32.1% are female. Differences exist between gender groups(P<0.05). Female pupils have higher rate of myopia than male pupils. 2. Handan City pupils there exist many bad habits with the eye, such as reading and writing when the distance between the eyes and the book is close, poor indoor using eye habits(lying down reading, light reading, etc.), with eyes too long(for a long time to do homework, watch TV, EEG, mobile phones and other close), do not pay attention to take the initiative to rest the eyes, outdoor eye using time is short(sports, outdoor recreation, etc.), learning pressure cause eye fatigue. 3. The survey shows that pupils in downtown Handan suffer a higher rate of myopia. Therefore, health and education departments shall attach importance to the prevention and control of myopia among school-age children, guide them on developing good eye care habits, ask them to spend more time on outdoor activities and rest as well as relaxing them from burdens on study. What is more, teachers and parents shall help children with reasonable timing of study, outdoor activities and rest for the prevention and control of myopia.
