Objective: To explore the morphometric abnormalities of brain gray matter volume(GMV),and the correlation between the GMV and pain intensity or disease duration in patients with chronic discogenic low back pain(LBP)in order to provide further insight about brain mechanisms during pain. Methods: 22 patients with discogenic LBP and 22 healthy individuals were enrolled and examined with a 3.0 T magnetic resonance(MR)scanner.(1)3D T1 FSPGR data were acquired and the morphological differences were compared between the two groups after data analysis;(2)In LBP group, the correlation between the GMV in Region of interest(ROI)and visual analog scale(VAS)of pain or disease duration was analyzed.Results:(1)Compared with the healthy control subjects, patients with LBP showed decreased GM volumes in several brain cortical areas including the right superior frontal gyrus, left medial frontal gyrus, left rectus, right superior temporal gyrus, right medial temporal gyrus, right insula and right inferior frontal gyrus(P<0.001,FWEc correction).(2)There is no correlation between the GMV in ROI and VAS of pain or disease duration,P>0.05.Conclusion: Compared with the control group, there are abnormal gray matter volume in patient with chronic discogenic LBP.These regions are affiliated with perception, emotion and cognitive and lead to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of chronic discogenic LBP.
