| Background Simple obesity refers to dystrophic diseases caused by over-accumulation of body fat due to excessive energy intake of the body and excess of human energy consumption. In recent years, with the improvement of living standards, changes in dietary patterns and lifestyles, the detection rate of children’s obesity has increased sharply, and obesity has had a serious impact on children’s quality of life. The school age period of children is a decisive stage in the growth process, which is in an important period of individual personality formation and social development.However,self-consciousness is the perceptual and subjective assessment of the individual’s psychological, physiological, and social functional status. Its formation and development are of great significance in the adaptation of individual life and the adjustment of mental health. Objective By understanding the prevalence of obesity in children aged 4 to 6 in Xinxiang and discussing the status and influencing factors of obese children’s self-consciousness and quality of life,we hope to provide a theoretical basis for constructing targeted intervention programs for obese children and promote their active self-awareness development so as to improve the quality of life of obese children. Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to collect one primary school from each of the four districts(Weibin District,Hongqi District,Makino District, and Fengquan District)of Xinxiang;then from the 4th to 6th grades of 4 elementary schools,2488 people from each class were selected for the survey. The questionnaire of general information,Peers nominate,Children’s self-consciousness scale(PHCSS),The core scale for the general application of the quality of life for children(Peds QLTM4.0)were used to investigate the obese children’s peer relationships,self-consciousness,quality of life.Descriptive statistical analysis,t test,ANOVA,Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed by SPSS17.0 software. Results 1.The overall obesity rate of children in grades 4 to 6 in Xinxiang was 16.0%,and the overweight rate was 15.4%.Among them, the obesity rate was 21.6% for boys,19.1% for overweight girls,12.3% for girls, and 12.9% for overweight children.2.In terms of peer relationships, obese children’s peer acceptance and social preference scores were significantly lower than normal weight children, and peer rejection scores were significantly higher than normal children(t=3.917,10.300,–10.770,P<0.01).The peer rejection score of obesity children was negatively correlated with the total score of self-conscious and quality of life(r=–0.170,–0.132,P<0.05),and the social preference scores was positively correlated with the total score of self-conscious and quality of life(r=0.211,0.140,P<0.05).3.The total score of self-consciousness and the score of physical appearance, physique, intelligence and school of obese children were significantly lower than those of normal children(t=3.434,4.026,4.302,2.435,P<0.05).Girls’ self-awareness scores higher than boys, but overall obesity has a greater impact on girls’ self-awareness.Regression analysis shows that participation in extra-curricular activities, learning pressure, peer relationships, achievement satisfaction, parental relationships, body satisfaction, father’s education, and education methods all entered a regression equation using self-awareness as a dependent variable, effectively interpreting a 28.6% variation(F=18.468,P<0.05).4.The total score of quality life and the scores of physiological function, social function and school function of obese children were significantly lower than those of normal weight children(t=3.446,4.035,3.676,2.310,P<0.05),and obesity had a greater impact on the quality of life of girls.Regression analysis showed that self-awareness,learning pressure, and participation in extracurricular activities all entered the regression equation with quality of life as the dependent variable, and effectively explained 37.9% of variance(F=45.61,P<0.05).5.The total score and dimensions of obese children’s self-consciousness and quality of life were significantly positively correlated(r=0.183~0.576,P <0.01).Conclusions 1.The obesity status of children in grades 4 to 6 in primary schools in Xinxiang is not optimistic, and parents, schools, and society should be highly concerned.2.Obese children have low levels of self-awareness,and the quality of life needs to be improved, and obesity has a greater impact on girls’ self-awareness and the quality of life.3.The level of self-awareness of obese children can be better predict through participation in extra-curricular activities, learning pressure, peer relationships, achievement satisfaction, parental relationships, body satisfaction, father’s education, and education method.Promoting the positive development of self-awareness in obese children can improve their quality of life. |
