With the development of society and the progress in science and technology, EST(English for Science and Technology) becomes more and more important. Scientific and technological text turns into an independent literary form with the development of science and technology. As we know, EST is characterized by preciseness. So EST translation is marked by objectivity, standardization, and distinctive feature in literary form. The objective of the report is to discuss the issues in the translation of scientific and technological texts under the guidance of the theory of Catford’s translation shifts, wherein the word “shift” means departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the source language to the target language. The focus of the translation is content correspondence.A book named Climate Change in the Polar Regions is translated. As a part of the global ecological environment system, the climate changes in the polar regions may affect the climate changes in the other parts of the world, and even the climate change of the whole world. Therefore, the book is chosen for translation to draw people’s attention to the climate issues of polar regions, and then to help get a better understanding of the urgency to protect the environment. This report provides an explicit description of the background of the task, its process and case analysis. It summarizes the different methods that the author uses when dealing with the source text in terms of level shifts and category shifts. At last, the report analyzes the process of scientific and technological text translation under the guidance of the theory of Catford’s translation shifts.
