On The Application Of Simplification Strategy In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpreting In The Context Of Press Conference

This thesis aims to study Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting in the context of press conference and explore the application of Simplification Strategy in this context and its effect on the quality of simultaneous interpreting.In literature review part, this thesis introduces the Effort Model, Framework Theory and the contents and application method of Simplification Strategy. It also summarizes opinions of experts and scholars on the application of Simplification Strategy. Through literature review, this thesis shows the necessity and feasibility of Simplification Strategy in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting. For example, the Simplification Strategy makes interpretation more fluent, concise and communicative.In empirical study part, the author chose 8 students from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation in Beijing Foreign Studies University for the experiment. Interpreters conduct simultaneous interpretation of the original text and the author will keep scores and make comparisons according to the experiment recording and verbatim record. The author then will conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of their translations. The experimental results demonstrate that interpreters who actively use Simplification Strategy have higher quality of interpreting.The conclusion of this thesis is that in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting, especially in the context of press conference, the application of Simplification Strategy can make interpretation more concise, convey key message and promote the effective communication between the audience and the spokesman. So the author suggests that the interpreter can effectively apply Simplification Strategy in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting, especially in the context of press conference to convey key message and improve the quality of interpreting.
