A Translation Report Of 101 Tips From American Rabbit Mother By Amy F. Chai (An Excerpt From Chapter Four)

This is a translation project report on translating the fourth chapter of 101 Tips from American Rabbit Mother, the third book published by Dr. Amy F. Chai, the winner of the President’s Award for Teachers. The book gives suggestions about domestic education that the author learned from her experience of cultivating two children successfully at home after the two kids were constantly criticized by the teacher because of their unappropriated behavior at school. The book is aimed to provide tips for those parents and educators who want to give their children a better domestic education and know more about western education, especially those parents who may plan to send their kids to have further education abroad. It is a book of great value in the market and deserve promotion and translation.This report briefs on the introduction and background of the translation project and takes the translation script as the objects of study, finding that the source texts have its distinctions. With simple and plain languages, the source text contains many cultural-loaded words and many imperative sentences. And during translating the source text, the translator find it’s difficult to balance the purpose of readability and accuracy. Therefore, under the guidance of the principle of Skopos Theory, the translator adopts mainly the strategy of domestication, and some related translating techniques of foreignization to achieve a balance between readability and accuracy. In this case, the translation script could achieve the main goal of attracting readers and sell out the books, and at the same time maintain its cultural uniqueness and distinction to bring exotic feeling to the readers. And the translator hope that some experiences and lessons learned during the translation can provide some hints for other translations of the same type.
