A Translation Report Of Decarbonising Cities:Mainstreaming Low Carbon Urban Development (Chapters 1-4)

In the history of global economic development, high carbon industry has for a long time worked as the main force to greatly contribute to the progress of society and the well-being of humanity. However, high carbon industry has produced large quantities of greenhouse gases, which increasingly threaten human survival. Therefore, human beings have begun to explore new modes of life to address the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and thus low carbon urban development has become a new approach to development and a common choice of countries around the world. In view of promoting low carbon lifestyle and out of the translator’s interest in EST (English for Science and Technology) translation, the translator selected Decarbonising Cities:Mainstreaming Low Carbon Urban Development (Chapters 1-4) as the translation task and research object.This thesis is a translation report of Decarbonising Cities:Mainstreaming Low Carbon Urban Development (Chapters 1-4). The translator has mainly introduced three global challenges (climate change, resource depletion and rapidly rising urban population) and their solutions, carbon emission reduction of Front-End of the economy and End-User, the role urban development plays in carbon emission reduction as well as urban centralized and decentralized management approaches. According to Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator has analyzed and translated the source text, so as to accurately translate information related to low carbon urban development in the book written by Vanessa Rauland and Peter Newman. In this translation report, the translator has mainly introduced theoretical guidance of the translation project and summarized difficulties that the translator encountered in the process of translation. Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, several solutions to translation difficulties are adopted, such as word-for-word translation, literal translation, amplification and omission, for the purpose of easy communication.This translation practice helps the translator gain a better understanding of EST texts and translation strategies, which can be helpful for a future career on EST translation. It is hoped that this translation would provide reference for cities, which aim at low carbon development.
