| With the development of international promotion of Chinese, there are more and more overseas Chinese learners. To meet with the demands of various countries and Chinese learners in Chinese teaching materials, it has been a common view in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to compile Chinese textbooks for overseas Chinese learners. In recent years, as Chinese learners in Japan increase constantly. Chinese teaching materials market in Japan is like a hundred flowers in bloom. In order to carry forward the international promotion of Chinese, China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) is supporting multilingual annotating and compiling work of national main teaching materials, with a total book volume of over 12 million by selling and donating. Obviously, there is a considerable number of local Chinese textbooks and multilingual annotating versions of general Chinese textbooks, but whether the contents can meet the actual needs of overseas Chinese teachers and learners is remain to be seen. Therefore, this comparative study is based on the Japan local textbook of Basics of Modern Chinese and the Japanese annotating version of Contemporary Chinese. Firstly, this paper will analyze the localization of Basics of Modern Chinese, then, I will analyze the compiling features of Japanese version of Contemporary Chinese to find out to what extent does this version reflect the feature of localization, after that, a comprehensive analysis of the two textbooks in the way of localization will be given in this paper. Lastly, I will make a conclusion on the merits and demerits of local Chinese textbooks and multilingual annotating versions of general Chinese teaching materials and put forward some suggestions on compiling Chinese teaching materials in Japan. The study shows that, with the comprehensive comparative study on language features and culture of Chinese and Japanese, Basics of Modern Chinese appropriately brought in Japanese characters and culture in the process of compiling and the teaching capacity is in accordance with the current situation and curriculum schedule of Chinese teaching in Japan, reflecting localization both superficially and in-depth, which makes the book targeted. While, Contemporary Chinese, an annotating textbook, has few compilations, which is superficial and non-targeted and fails to meet the needs of Chinese learners in Japan. However, we can also learn from its systematicness and scientificity. Therefore, the later compiling and revision of Japan’s Chinese textbooks can make full use of the advantages of both kinds of textbooks, namely, learn from others’ strong points and close the gap. |
