He studies culture from the perspective of geography and points out that culture is political and symbolic. This thesis focuses on Peter Jackson analysis of racial problems in the context of space. By analyzing Jackson’s study of racial issues in street space, working space and residential space, the thesis proposes that space provides an arena for racial struggles and race is full of oppression and resistance.By adopting Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, the thesis elaborates Jackson’s racial studies from three different spaces. The first chapter analyzes Jackson’s racial study in street space. Street space provides an arena not only for the struggle between the black and dominant group, but also for blacks’ resistance. Street space is filled with contested meanings. The second chapter analyzes the contested meanings in the working space. The divisions of work, representations from the managers as well as the unemployment caused by whites’ colonization are full of hegemony put forward by Gramsci. However, the hegemony is also resisted by subordinate groups. The third chapter aims on Jackson’s study on racial issues in living space. The segregation of living, inequalities of housing policy and so on reflect the ideology of the ruling class. And the oppression leads to resistance. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | race, space, oppression, resistance, hegemony | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
