This is a translation project report. The source text is “The City of Eternal Youth”, chapter seven taken from Film and the City-The Urban Imaginary in Canadian Cinema, written by Gorge Menkly, a Canadian professor. The aim of this translation project is to provide a reference for those Chinese reseachers who endeavour to study Canadian films.Based on a brief introduction to the translation project and the background of the source text, this report conducts further investigations about the difficulties and the solutions in translation process under the guidance of Newmark's suggestion for text categorization and two translation methods: semantic and communicative methods. This report consists of four parts: the first chapter is a description of the translation project, including project background, objectives and significance; an introduction to the source text, which involves the background of the source text, including the introduction of the author, main contents of the source text, and linguistic features of the source text. The second chapter discusses the translation preparation for the project and an analysis of the source text. The third chapter is about translation difficulties and methods. The cultural-loaded expressions and long sentences which are frequently used in source text are main difficulties in translation. Therefore, the translator combines semantic translation and communicative translation with such translation skills as addition and sentence division. Part four concludes with the lessons, implications and unsolved problems in the translation project.
