This is a translation project report of Dealing with China:An Insider Unmasks the New Economic Superpower,a memoir written by Henry M.Paulson Jr.,of which Chapter Twenty-the Way Forward is the source text. The source text is excerpted from Part 3 of the book.In part three,it talks about building bridges between China and America during Henry’s being the head of the Paulson Institute.Henry details some issues exited in the development between China and America, and also gives some his own opinions. The eight principles on how to deal with China are the most significant.Readers can have some new knowledge of China-U.S.relationship from the description of an American. This is a fresh perspective for readers to objectively understand the relationship between the two countries. It is instructive and inspiring. The translator adopts Semantic Translation Theory by Peter Newmark as the guiding theory.Besides, the Skopos Theory also applies to guide the translation process.According to Newmark’s categories of texts, the type of text is expressive function type, which attaches more importance on the content than effect. Therefore, the translator pay special attention to the content in order to loyally reproduce what the author what to express to the reader in target language. The most important rule of Skopos Theory is “skopos rule”.It determines translation methods and strategies while recipient determines the purpose of translating,so the translator should pay special attention to the choice of words.Generally speaking, there are four parts of this report.Part One introduces project background, objective, significance and structure of this report.Part Two gives a brief introduction to the author and the main content of the source text, and it analyzes the language features of it.Part Three presents the translation difficulties and translation methods with specific examples. The main translation methods adopted in the translation process are inversion, sentence division, conversion and so on.Part Four concludes with translation experience, lessons and some difficulties in translation.
