| China is a major oil and gas consumer and a major producer as well. However, China is still highly reliable on foreign countries and companies for importing oil. Many oil and gas graduates are rejected by the industry for the shortage of professional skills and first-hand experiences, which increases unemployment and blocks economic development. Nowadays, the problem faced by education in oil and gas industry in China is the disconnection between education institutions and industry, while collaborations and partnerships between the two sides have been established in many foreign countries. In the source text, eight case studies on the successful partnerships are presented and the translation of them will benefit both education and the industry in China.The thesis is made up of two parts. In the first part of the translation practice, Case Study 4, Case Study 5, Case Study 6 and Case Study 7 from the book Education and Training for the Oil and Gas Industry:Case Studies in Partnership and Collaboration are translated from English to Chinese. In the second part, there is a report on the translation which consists of four chapters. In The first chapter, the translation process is introduced on its background, significance, theoretic instructions and goals. The second chapter is about the content and the language style of the source text. The third chapter, is about difficult points and translation skills. Translation skills adopted are analyzed at both lexical level and sentence level, including free translation, reconstruction, annotation, amplification, etc. The fourth chapter is about enlightenments and experience and problems to be solved.Under the guidance of functional equivalence promoted by Eugene Nida, the translator adopted translation skills including liberal translation, restructuring, annotation and so forth to achieve the faithfulness and idiomaticity of the target text at the same time. And only in this way, can the translator ensure that the reaction of target readers to the target text is the same with that of original reader to the source text. The fact that with functional equivalence theory many problems were able to be solved indicates that even today the theory of functional equivalence is of great importance in translation.It is another translation experience gained by the translator, who gained more professional knowledge and corresponding expression in target language. After the translation, the case studies may serve as experience from other countries for education and industry in China to facilitate the development of education in oil and gas industry. |
