A Comparative Study Of The Themes’ Film Of Youth In Mainland China And Taiwan In The New Century

Youth theme of the film, known as “Youth Film”, has become one of the formal studies of a type of films in the United States. However, in mainland China and Taiwan, Youth Film is indeed started very lately since the early 1970 s, and it has already become one of the main types of film in the consumer markets until now. In Taiwan, along with the characteristics of “feelings” and “pure and fresh” and “Star consumption”, gradually become a type of film which the audiences are looking forward to. As in the mainland China, In general, the mainland’s youth theme movies have experienced 3 main revolution periods, which are the adolescence, youth exploration period, the consumption of youth.As we can see, there are lots of definition and expression of youth, but in this study, the author mainly use the definition of youth films made by the famous Japanese film critic Kitagawa Reiko, in which she believed that the source of the film is youth, youth film can not only be made by young people to shoot their own youth film, it can also made by senior filmmakers to shoot their youth movie with their ideas and characteristics, that is to say, the forms of youth film could be various.Through the study of Taiwan and the Mainland China Youth films, especially the comparative study of the similarities and differences between their presentation of the theme, narrative, audience of the films, the author tries to evaluate the attribution of cross-strait youth films identified by the youth, in order to find out the reason why the youth film has its strong consumption power in the market, thus, to put forward some ideas and solutions in the development of youth film both in Taiwan and the Mainland China. In this paper, the author uses literature research, history research method, case analysis method and comparative method as the research methods, in which the comparative method is considered to be the main method that the author used in thepaper. However, the characteristic of comparative study is uncertain and directly, it also required lot of works in solving the present problems, due to the limitation of this paper, the author hopes this paper could provide some understandings and enlightenments for the people who like the youth films through the discussion in order to cause more concern and research on youth films based on the results of the paper.Last but not the least, perhaps youth is far away from our life, but the youth theme of film could certainly walk into the future we hope for, finally becoming a part of our future life.
