| This paper is a close observation of Ni Tsan’s activities in 1341-1368 of the late Yuan dynasty. To explain the migration and turmoil of the literati in the east-south part of China, my study builds on two perspectives:the collective and the individual. I intend to recreate the environment of Ni Tsan’s life during the homeless days from the geographical environment, the climate characteristics, the cause of leaving home before the break of the war, and the displaced residence, etc. Further more, I want to show the situation and the choice which the literati faced in the chaos of late Yuan., through the study of Ni Tsan’s friends Wang and Zhang’s familyies. On top of this, the dissertation focuses on three paintings:"Shuizhu Ju" scroll-painting, "Baichi Wutong Tuan", "Gengyuxuan ", to discusses fewer questions like who is the owner of the painting "Shuizhu Ju", where is the Baichi Wutong Xuan, and the paintings about "nostalgia" in the late Yuan. The theme and composition of Ni Tsan’s paintings are closely linked with the times. The purpose of this paper is to show the background of the painting through the activities of Ni Zan at the end of the Yuan dynasty. |
