This thesis is the author’s practice report on the simulated English to Chinese consecutive interpreting for speeches at the 7th Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation Forum. There are four chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is a brief introduction to the interpreting task. The second chapter is a description of the interpreting process, including the pre-task preparation, task execution, and the audiences’ feedback. The third chapter is the main part of this thesis, in which the author elaborates the main concepts of the Interpretive Theory, explores the specific strategies used by her during the process of interpreting, and summarizes the limitations existed in this practice and methods for improvement. Chapter four is the conclusion part, in which the author makes a conclusion on this report and gives some suggestions for further study.It is found that, during the interpreting process, because of the limited time, the author was prone to be confined by words, phrases and the sentence structure in the original speech, thus made some mistakes, such as correction of words, long pauses before interpreting. Proposed by Danica Seleskovitch, the first dean of Ecole Supérieure d’Interprétariat et de Traduction(ESIT), the Interpretive Theory holds that what the interpreter should try to understand and interpret is the sense or ideas of the speaker, rather than the linguistic form of the source text. The idea of deverbalization is the cornerstone of the Interpretive Theory. The Paris school holds that during the interpreting process, the sound code disappears, but the deverbalized communicative sense is kept in the interpreter’s memory, and what the interpreter should do is convey the sense to his or her listeners.In this report, based on the practice, the author makes an attempt to find out some specific strategies of deverbalization, in order to provide reference to other interpreting learners.
