Language Features And Translation Methods Of Mechanical Equipment Instructions

With the prosperous development of China’s economy, more and more foreign products have entered China’s market. It is of great necessity and significance to provide Chinese customers with product instruction manuals of high-quality. However, the researches on the translation of mechanical equipment instructions in China are quite limited, most of the studies are concerned with cosmetic or medicine instructions translation. This thesis aims to analyze the language features of mechanical equipment instructions and find out practical translation methods.This thesis uses the translation of Rotary Vacuum Pumps Instruction Manual as a case study. It is the instruction manual for E2M28 and E2M30 rotary vacuum pumps of Edwards, and was written in English. The translator analyzed the lexical features of the source text, and found mechanical equipment instructions full of terminologies, compound words, abbreviations, nominalization, and non-finite verbs. On the syntactical level, the translator introduced elliptical sentences, long sentences, imperative sentences and passive sentences. And then, discourse features were presented.On the basis of language features of the source text, the translator illustrated common translation methods applied during the translation process. From the lexical perspective, amplification, omission, and conversion of part of speech were introduced. Negation, adjustment of word order, division of long sentences, and the translation of imperative sentences and passive sentences were introduced from the syntactic perspective.During the translation process, the translator met various kinds of difficulties, and was benefited a lot form the translation project. From the analysis of the language features of this project, the translator found some practical and specific translation methods. It is hoped that the findings of this translation project can benefit the similar translation projects in the future.
