As one of the most portrait painters in the Qing dynasty, Yu Zhiding, born in a poor family, got the access to study for painting.painting art from famous letters in Zhe Jiang when he went to squire Li to be a boy servant in a study because his host was open-minded and gave him more guidance for his gift in painting instead of scolding, so he became strongly interested in painting. During this period, he had frequent contacts with those famous letters, and became adept at technique of expression. Not only did he improve his painting skills but also developed his own art style. At the same time, he combined " Bochen genre of Chinese figure painting" with Lan Ying’s painting style. Gradually, Yu Zhiding, became known in the logicians of Jiang Nan. At the age of 34 years old, Yu Zhiding got another chance to become an portrait painter in the royal court because he was recommended by Qiao Lai, who always appreciated him. During his stay in Beijing, he made friends with famous painters in a large scale, appreciated many excellent paintings so that studied the skill of "endeavors to send" of Jiao Bingzhen, so his painting skills was improved and he formed his own style of portrait painting. Thus he turned generation master in his time.The paper analyses his status in the painting history by describing his lifetime, his study behaviors and his painting style. It includes 3 big parts which can be divided into 6 chapters. The first chapter, is about his brief introduction to his lifetime, describes his identity, growing environment, and what led to his motivation to create paintings; the main part includes chapter2, chapter3 and chapter4,which illustrate the importance of his portrait paintings for some famous letters in The Kangxi Emperor’s period and analyses the characteristics and value of his paintings particularly the influence of schmaltz and classicism to his paint ings. Meanwhile,this part also states the relationship between Yu Zhiding and other famous letters,their help to him and his return. It’s the first attempt to study the difference between portrait painters and professional painters.The third part includes chapter5 and chapter6, and it talks about the value of his paintings, at the same time, it makes a conclusion to the whole passage. Yu Zhiding advocated the portrait painting should be based on figures to express the feeling of people, inheriting and developing ancestors. He also created many new paintings by making foreign things serve China and having himself stand out in the world.
