| This program, the Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement Program, is a regular cooperation program held by the Victorian Employers" Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) and the Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce (JSFIC). The program itself offers an opportunity for trade, investment and cooperation between China and Victoria to build new partnerships. With nearly 20 entrepreneurs present in 2015. the reporter was a part of this program working as an interpreter transferring to them the information about administrative environment. In the course of interpreting, the reporter came across internal and external barriers which placed potential obstacles in terms of efficient and accurate interpreting. Internal barriers involved lacking of cultural background information about Jiangsu Province, poor psychological qualities and lacking of flexibility, while external barriers included different accents and dialects of speakers and cultural differences. Based on this interpreting practice, literature review and more importantly his own reflection, the reporter came up with four strategies to deal with the problems that occurred in the project. First of all, full preparation is needed before hand and the interpretive theory should be effectively applied to interpreting. Secondly, interpreters should improve their psychological qualities, especially by communication with speakers and colleagues so as to reduce stress. Thirdly, necessary strategies for emergent situation should be adopted. Three solutions, such as "ask", "guess" and "skip" can be taken to deal with some unfamiliar local cultures. Lastly, the cross-cultural communication competence can be enhanced through various channels. The four solutions, which can be used as references for MTI majors, efficiently helped the reporter to perform this interpreting task. The result shall enrich the interpreting research in terms of trade and culture. |
