The reporter undertook the VJBP (Victoria-Jiangsu Business Placement) Interpreting Project provided by the Federation of Industry and Commerce of Jiangsu Province in May,2016. She conducted different types of interpreting with diversified subjects in the project. In the course of the project, the reporter was confronted with a series of difficulties, especially regarding the inadequacy or otherwise the abuse of the background knowledge, which produced strongly negative impacts. To be specific, these difficulties can be further divided into three categories: a poor storage of encyclopedic knowledge; lack of industry knowledge; and improper use of the background information. Based on a critical review of the live recording and an analysis of the transcript, the reporter proposes four solutions to these problems and difficulties by drawing upon outstanding interpreters and previous theoretical studies. First, vastly expand the knowledge scope, integrating task-specific preparation into a massive accumulation of learning; second, establish timely contact and effective communication with the speaker so as to get familiar with his/her accent, career background, and related terminology; third, avoid the abuse of background information by faithfully following the original intention of the speaker, without personal interference of ideas; fourth, properly use the interpretive approach or even the strategy of fuzziness, to ensure that the main ideas are communicated. These specific difficulties and corresponding solutions provide valuable information for novice interpreters to increasingly expand background knowledge in different tasks for better communicative purpose.
