Non-pictographic is an important phenomenon in the evolution of ancient Chinese characters. The doctoral dissertations, in the structure of Chinese Characters History Books, are important achievement on the phenomenon of non-pictographic in ancient Chinese characters evolution. They introduced sporadically non-pictographic phenomenon. In view of this situation, we are trying to sort out the related ancient writing materials on the basis of previous studies, to make a more comprehensive investigation and research about the phenomenon. The paper is divided into six parts:The first part is the introduction. The chapter mainly introduces the objectives and significance of the study. On the basis of previous studies on the phenomenon, the paper clarifies the meaning, the source of materials and research methods of the paper. The second part discusses the relationship between the non-pictographic and phonetic. They have many connections, though there are many differences between them. The third part keeps the focus on studies of the phenomenon. We divide non-pictographic phenomenon into three categories, namely the whole of non-pictographic, the component of non-pictographic and the deformation of non-pictographic, some explication can be gained with some typical words. The fourth part is about the reasons of the non-pictographic. The reasons for the non-pictographic phenomena can be discussed from three aspects:the semantic, the written words and the writing. The fifth part is the crossover study between non-pictographic with other ancient writing phenomena. The sixth part is the theoretical study of the residual. The process of ancient literal non-pictographic and the maturity of the semantic character are related closely. The mature process of "human" character is simply introduced, and this process can also be seen as a process of meaning.
