The ecosystem of traditional culture is in a severe risk. Under the circumstance, it has been a global and emergent issue to safeguard the traditions and cultures of every nation, which is vital to improve peoples’ confidence and awareness on their cultures.Rongchang Folding Fan, once a glory in the history of China’s traditional crafts, now is facing a serious situation in terms of its inheritance and protection. The paper conducts researches on the inheritance and protection of Rongchang Folding Fan from the perspective of folklore, arts, and history. Furthermore, it also provides some suggestions on its inheritance and protection through a SWOT analysis on its current situation and existing problems.The paper consists of six parts.The first part serves as the introduction which sums up the rationale of conducting this research, the relevant studies at home and abroad, the theoretical and practical significance, the research purposes,contents, framework, research methods, research procedures and the focus and innovation points of this study. Part two gives a brief introduction on the history of Rongchang Folding Fan. It makes a detailed analysis on its origin, conditions, and courses of the development. Part three is a brief description on its technologic process, including its materials, forming tools and features. Part four deals with its artistic values and aestheticism. On one hand, it categorizes the styles and features of the fans; on the other hand, it portraits the aesthetic value from the perspective of craftsmanship, harmony and imagery, forming basis for its inheritance and protection.Part five is at the core of the paper for it conducts an analysis on the current status of the Fan’s inheritance, including the realistic problems it faced with. Factors which restrained its inheritance are outlined in this part, providing solid evidence for the strategies of protection. The last part provides some advisable suggestions for the Fan’s inheritance and protection through a SWOT analysis on its inheritance, in a hope to provide guidance to the protection of other traditional crafts.
