The Study Of Book Title Translation Of British&American Fiction From The Functional Equivalence Theory

Literature is a kind of art, which is built-in the image of language, to show the daily life. With the prosperity of translation in China and in order to ensure that they are much easier for readers, translators have finished lots of foreign literature which is introduced to the domestic. Book title is regarded as the soul of literature and it is important for readers’ interests to read. Book titles may firstly come into readers’ eyes, which are the windows of the books, just like the labels of the products that people can find the theme and plot of the title. Furthermore, it is the core of authors that reflects the style features of the work. What is more, readers can judge whether the work is worth reading or not from the title of work. Therefore it is meaningful to translate the book titles.Based on the problems of the translation of the title, this paper is mainly discussing the Functional Equivalence in direction of the British & American Fiction. It is different from the traditional translation theories, the Functional Equivalence is based on the reflection of adaptors, and it focuses on the equivalence of the reflection between target language readers and the source language readers. The Theory also points the essence of translation is to use the most natural equivalence to representation the source language information. And, furthermore, the key of successful translation of book titles is readers’ reflection and acceptation, which is agreed with the Functional Equivalence Theory.Through analysis, the author draws conclusions as follows:(1) In order to achieve functional equivalence in book title translation, feasible strategies include literal translation, amplification or omission and free translation. Among them the most commonly adopted are literal translation and free translation;(2) In formal equivalence, liberal interpretation is generally preferred, while in cultural functional equivalence, free translation is more commonly interpreted.(3) Translation strategies are adopted on the principle of increasing the extent to which the target receptors have the same feelings as the source receptors have.
