Mendelssohn, a German composer, was one of the greatest musical masters of the Romantic period. His works, which reflect the characteristics of the Romanticism and have a close connection with the music of the Classical period, play an important role for German music. He created a lot of outstanding masterpieces in his life, including the genres of symphony, overture, oratorio, piano music and so on. Among all his symphonies, Symphony(Italy) and Symphony(Scotland) are the most famous ones. Songs without Words, a representative work that Mendelssohn created according to the songs' themes and musical forms is different from other composers' works in the music characteristics and styles and can help people clearly learn about his creating style.The characteristics of Songs without Words are studied and classified at first, based on which the playing skills are illustrated then. With the vocalization of instrumental music as the starting point, by means of the documentary study, the audio-visual information analysis, the observational survey, the expert interview and the induction and comparison, 48 piano pieces of Songs without Words can be classified into 4 categories, pieces full of characteristics, pieces of chorus, pieces of solo and pieces of ensemble. This thesis with the analysis of Songs without Words gives the players some theory support and references and shows people the characteristics of the vocalization of instrumental music reflected in Songs without Words completely.
