On Tone Translation In Dialogue

In recent years, it is well known that there is an increasing interest in reading English popular fiction, and their Chinese translations. The source text under discussion in this thesis is an excerpt from The Best of Me written in 2011 by the contemporary popular American writer Nicholas Sparks, who is famous for the romance novel writing. The Best of Me is the only book of Nicholas Sparks that has not been translated into Chinese. It is a good novel that is worth translating into Chinese and also worth researching.The novel to be translated consists of two chapters. In the process of translation practice, the dialogue translating, one of the highlights of the author’s writing techniques, is the most difficult problem to be solved in translation practice. The tone of the speaker should also be attached great importance. This is the feature of the source text and also the task objective remains to be solved. Diction, punctuation and rhetorical device, which are three indispensable elements or perspectives when understanding the tone of speaker, should be carefully solved when translating tone in dialogue. Therefore, The priorities as well as difficulties in the translation practice are concluded as follows: the concise and vivid expression of the tone of the speaker through proper choice of words; the correct translating of the tone in dialogue through flexible adaption of punctuation; the coherent and clear revivification of tone in dialogue through better rhetorical representation. Some translation strategies are also applied in the process of the dialogue translation, such as free translation, functional equivalence, translation transfiguration, etc.This report consists of four parts. The first part gives an overview of the translation practice. The second part explains the process of translation practice. The third part is the case study and the fourth part is conclusion.
