Translation Strategies Of The Intangible Cultural Heritage Texts

Intangible cultural heritages of certain ethnic groups,reflect their rich emotions,unique ways of thinking and aesthetics.Shanxi Intangible Cultural Heritage List encompasses folk literature,folk music,folk arts and crafts,traditional operas and other sections.It is a problem worth studying that how to translate the traditional operas while not losing its historical and cultural information,its national characteristics,its geographical features and unique customs,so that the readers can truly feel its charm.But very few domestic scholars specifically studied the introduction and dissemination of traditional operas in Shanxi,the translation practice and related studies in this area need to be explored.In the process of translation,the most difficult part is the understanding and rendery of the cultural background which entails large numbers of culture-specific items.The culture-specific items were proposed in 1996 by a Spanish translator,Javier Franeo Aixela.With Aixela's translation strategies and techniques as the guide,the translation of the culture-specific items in traditional operas in Shanxi Intangible Cultural Heritage List is the research topic for the purpose of cultural exchange.This report is divided into four parts:the first chapter describes the task and summarizes the relevant research results,the significance and purpose of this study;the second chapter represents the translation process and the problems faced at all stages;the third chapter is the case study,which explores translation strategies and techniques of culture-specific items with examples;the last chapter summarizes the future direction of my translation practice.Depending on the characteristics and difficulties of the text,five different types of Aixela's translation strategies and techniques on culture-specific items are used in this report:orthographic adaptation with extratextual gloss,linguistic(non-cultural)translation,intratextual gloss,extratextual gloss and cultural explanation,and absolute universalization.In the process of translation,we have to retain the original color of culture while considering the acceptability of the target text in order to achieve the goal of cultural communication.
