A Practice Report On Translation Of Language Refinement In Salvage Document

This report is based on a translation task from China Rescue and Salvage of Ministry of the People’s Republic of China.The task includes Chinese documents which were translated into English for submission to International Maritime Organization for acceptance as its official guidelines for salvage around the world,including Rescue Guide to Capsized Vessel,Guide to Emergency Towing and Guide to Firefighting and Rescue at Sea.As a result of different culture backgrounds and different thinking modes,complete equivalence in expression is difficult to be achieved.In the whole processes of this mission,much efforts were paid to the issue of redundancy,which refers to words or expressions that are unnecessary based on skopos theory.To manage the seemingly inevitable redundancies in the translation,two arrangements were adopted in the whole process.The first is choosing the most appropriate source-to-target version strategy which includes avoiding metaphrase,removing Chinese adjunct words and using general phrases.The second is refining the target version,which includes using terminology,changing attributive clause to noun phrase and adjusting word orders.This report is divided into four parts,including description of translation target,translation process,case studies and conclusion.The result of this study and practices are expected to provide references for future studies.
