As we know,the reformation in language teaching field has never stopped.Among all these changes happened these years,the focus of research has tended to transfer from teachers to learners.It has been the main purpose of language teaching in the whole world to train the ability of self-directed learning.Therefore,how to achieve this goal is well worth discussing.Once the learners master self-directed learning,they can easily get access to new knowledge and technologies,as well as take proper challenges and missions.As a result,the illiteracies are no longer the ones who have little knowledge but ones who know little about learning.English is known as the world language for quite a long time.For English learners,listening,speaking,reading and writing are four main basic skills,among which reading is the most essential perceiving activity.Also,it's one of the most powerful ways to acquire knowledge as well as the foundation of learning every subject including English.Therefore,not only does reading play a key role in the procedure but also the purpose of learning.However,in practical teaching of the higher vocational schools,students are commonly not good at self-directed learning and less active.They have more pressure and challenge after graduation.As a result,the English teachers in higher vocational schools should realize the necessity of training students to acquire self-directed learning method and inspire them to learn as well as build a stable foundation.In the Instruction part and Section I,the definition and feature of self-directed learning,the research status at home and abroad,the theoretical background and the relationship between self-directed learning and English reading are introduced,which also demonstrates the possibility of training students to learn self-directed.In Section II,questionnaires are used to search and analysis for the causes that influence students' capability of self-directed learning.The teaching strategy of training these skills are put forward in Section III.At last in Section IV,the author gives the experimental results based on the comparative research lasting a whole academic year on higher vocational English reading.The results of the previous and latter exams show that the proposed strategy can actually improve the grades of their English study.The training of the ability of self-directed learning is an effective way to improve the reading skill.Students can also put it into use in every other subject and build a solid basis for their study and work in the future.
