With the economic globalization and cultural development, cultural exchanges between the East and the West are growing. As an important part of culture, translation has important significance to spread the culture, and it has attracted more attention from the domestic and foreign scholars. So it is necessary to study the translation of English novels. The novel is an obvious reflection of the culture in a certain stage of social development, and it is also a microcosm of that period, and fiction translation studies is of great significance for the cultural exchanges,in that the novel contains rich cultural background information and has distinct cultural characteristics and important functions. This thesis analysis is based on the English novel The Crimson Petal and the White translated by the author and published in Chongqing Press and adopts the theory of cultural default and its-compensation.Translation is the process of crossing cultural default. When in communication, the author of a certain work and his intended readers share the same cultural understanding mode and cultural background,so he omits something that the intended readers know and can easily understand,in this process, the author has no care for the understanding of the readers of foreign cultures,so the sense vacuum thus forms. That is cultural default. From the angle of cultural exchanges, the important task for novel translators is to convey the cultural information in original text to the targeted readers. Therefore,in the course of compensating the cultural default for targeted readers, the translator should attempt to ensure the cultural exchange effect of the novel so as to reach the best and the readers will be able to enjoy this cultural exploration. In the process of translation, the translator should not faithfully express the meaning of the original novel, but also play the best of the distinctive features of exotic culture,so as to spread the foreign culture and convey important information to targeted readers, and help target readers gain the best understanding and appreciation, the effect closest to that of source readers. And the responsibility of the translator is to compensate the cultural default and help the reader of targeted language obtain a clear understanding.Solving cultural default can help to promote cultural exchanges. The translator should carefully examine the cultural elements, and make corresponding compensation according to the specific circumstances,in order to make it closer and closer to the original purpose of the author, therefore eliminating the sense vacuum of readers,to achieve the greatest degree of understanding of the cultural information that the original text conveys. This thesis is divided into six main parts. The first part is the introduction. The second part is the description of the translation task, mainly from three aspects:the background of the translation task, requirements of the client and the significance of translation. The third part is the description of the translation process, including the preparation work before,in and after translation. The forth part is the case analysis, which describes respectively the application of the translation theory of cultural default in the practice of the translation of the novel " The Crimson Petal and the White";the necessity of compensation, compensation principles, strategies and methods, and detailed analysis of the compensation in this translation practice. The fifth part is the conclusion, enlightenment that will be helpful to dealing cultural default in translation in the future. In the compensation of cultural default, the translator should be able to adopt various methods flexibly and give full play to her subjective initiative and creative power in accordance with the specific context. The last part are references and appendixes of the original text and translation version.
