BackgroundAs the relationship between personality and academic performance,the relationship between time management and academic performance is attracting more and more attentions.However,what is the mechanism that personality influences academic performance? And what are the relationships between personality,time management and academic performance? The answers of these questions remained unknown.In addition,the research about personality,time management and academic performance focused on the college and junior middle school students.There are few studies about technical secondary school students,let alone nursing students in technical secondary schools.What the relationship between personality,time management and academic performance in junior middle school nursing students? This is the main questions need to solve in this study.ObjectiveTo explore the characteristics of personality,time management and academic performance and the relationship between them,to give suggestions for the education of nursing students in Secondary Vocational Schools.Methods371 nursing students in 11 classes of four technical secondary schools in some province which has twenty technical secondary schools were selected to complete the Adolescence time Management Disposition Inventory(ATMD)and Five Factors ofAdolescent Personality Inventory.The participants’ professional skills were divided into theoretical achievements and the scores of skills.The scores of fundamentals of nursing,internal medicine nursing and surgical nursing were achieved from their teachers after the school leaders’ and their agreement as the theoretical achievements,while the scores of the bed operation,and aseptic operation were selected as the scores of skills.The total scores of the five tests were the index of professional skills.SPSS19.0 was used to analyze the data,in which two sample independent t test were used to analyze the difference of personality,time management disposition and professional skills between demographic variables,while Pearson product moment correlation were used to test the relationship between variables,and regression analysis were used for the effect of personality and time management disposition on professional skills.Results1.There were no relationship between sense of time value and theoretical achievements;dimensions of time management disposition and the total scores were related with profession skills and their dimensions(r=0.11~0.23,P<0.01);2.Extraversion was positively related with scores of skills(r=0.12,P<0.05),openness to experience,conscientiousness was related with professional skills and their dimensions(r=0.13~0.20,P<0.01);3.There were negative relationship between neuroticism and sense of time efficacy(r=-0.115,P<0.05);all the other dimensions of personality were positively related with profession skills and their dimensions(r=0.23~0.63,P<0.01);4.Time management disposition mediated both the relationship between openness and profession skills,and the relationship between conscientiousness and profession skills.Conclusions1.For technical secondary nursing students,the higher level of time management disposition,the higher level of profession skills;the more level of extraversion,the morelevel of skill scores;the more level of conscientiousness and extraversion,the more level of profession skills;2.The more level of extraversion,openness,agreeableness,and conscientiousness,the more level of time management disposition;the more level of neuroticism,the less level of time management disposition;3.Openness and conscientiousness influence professional skills through time management disposition.
