Research On Hangzhou City During Sui-tang And Five Dynasties

Hangzhou city is one of the seven-ancient capitals in China’s history,therefore there have been copious scholastic works centered on it.The span of those researches generally stem from the period since the Song dynasty,particularly the Southern Song Dynasty,during which Hangzhou city was the political center and provisional capital.Nevertheless,chronic development as the city had experienced originally before it eventually witnessed its splendid urban culmination.While prior to the Southern Song Dynasty,scarce publications related to Hangzhou city have been found yet.Consequently,the research and discussion focal of this paper is the Hangzhou city’s urban evolution during Sui-Tang and the Five Dynasties.Several specific issues will be demonstrated through three main sections.The issue of the first section largely relates to Hangzhou served as the administrative region during Sui-Tang and the Five Dynasties with my personal statement proposed in a political angle derived from the foundation of previous researches.On the basis of clearly sorted historical circumstances of the Sui Dynasties when Hangzhou city didn’t come into being.A comparative analysis of literatures and table summary are made to discuss the counties’ alterations throughout the Sui-Tang and the Five Dynasties.Regime wrestles cropped up frequently,especially at the late period of Sui and the early time of Tang,which induced dramatically modifications of counties During Empress Wu’s ruling.The second portion is principally to explore the changes of Hangzhou’s history.The beginning of this part stresses on the connection between Hangzhou and the QIANTANG Country,following with the matters of "ZI City"、"JIA City" and "LUO City",then ushers in the significant research about the "CHONG City" system,specifically the "Hangzhou LUO City" of WUYUE State.Ultimately,viewpoints are given to discuss the layout and management of the city,in addition to central point the LIFANG unit system,"Xiang" ’s profound influence on which appeared as a novel administrative organizationChapter Three essentially studies the relation between Hangzhou city and the canal,which clarifies the construction and improvement of the Grand Canal in the Hangzhou section,including its complex and changeable historical advancement.Then the paper expounds consequences that impacted on Hangzhou development arising from the process of canal changes in separate eras of Sui,Tang And Five Dynasties,especially stressing on the effects on city space form and layout.Conclusively,this dissert explains reasons why the city developed in form of from north to south,as well as illustrates accounts that the city abandoned northward development pattern.
