The curriculum system of Whole-time Master's Degree of Education(abbreviated to 'the curriculum system'),which constitutes pre-service teacher education,has a great influence on pre-service teachers' professional growth.With a short history in China,while the curriculum system has made some achievements,many problems need to be solved.Based on the learners' needs,this research project intends to find out the problems existing in the curriculum system which focuses on English teacher education and to provide suggestions for the curriculum betterment.This research is a case study of the curriculum system in East China Normal University.By means of questionnaire and in-depth interview and based on the theory of need analysis and humanistic learning concept,this study aims to discuss the problems in subject selection,the content,structure and implementation of the curriculum and teaching assessment.The finding of the study is that the curriculum system has the following problems:the missing English subjects,such as English translation,British and American literature;the irrelevant curriculum contents;the optional courses more in name than reality;the linadequate practical courses;the implementation of educational practice needing improving;the course of educational methodology neglecting students' practices.Based on the construction of teachers' knowledge base,the curriculum goal and the requirements of the latest national Standard of English Curriculum,some solutions are put forth to better the existing curriculum system and some suggestions are provided specifically for the curriculum administrators,the professors and the students.The solutions are as follows:adding the English courses;enriching the optional courses;including Middle School Observation and Microteaching in the practical courses;strengthening the implementation of the teaching practice;the course of educational methodology emphasizing students' practices.
