In present-day society,communication between universities is increasing day by day.One of the effective ways to understand a university is to read its Student Charter,since its rules and regulations can reflect the educational concepts and administration methods.However,there are few studies on Chinese-English translation of Student Charter.The translation strategies(semantic translation or communicative translation)and corresponding translation techniques are selected in the light of Peter Newmark’s Text Category Theory.By taking the text type(informative text),the translation purpose and the target readers into consideration,the author draws a conclusion that semantic translation should be mainly used in the task and meanwhile,these two strategies shall be flexibly employed together.The work of Chinese-English translation of Student Charter of Tianjin University,with total words number over 10,000,lasts for over 20 days.This Translation Practice Report is composed of four parts.The first part is task description,demonstrating the background,significance and features of the text.The second part is the description of the working process,including preparation for the task,translating process and proofreading process.The third part is case study part,analysing how to utilise translation strategies(semantic translation or communicative translation)in the light of Peter Newmark’s Text Category Theory.Strategies and techniques for translating words(domestication of modal verb usage and domestication and foreignization for translating specialized vocabulary)and sentences(free translation for sentences;domestication of sentence structure and domestication and foreignization for translating parallel structures)are analysed.The fourth part is the conclusion of the practice,to conclude the deficiency of the practice and the related reasons and also the points that can be improved and the implications for future work.
