A Study On Semantic Word-formation From The Perspective Of Qulia Structure And Argument Structure

This paper mainly applies the qualia structure theory to the study of compound words whose lexical meanings cannot be inferred from their morpheme meanings.We take 2022 undirected disyllabic compound words,namely,a+b=c type,as example from the Chinese Semantic Word-formation Database.Then we investigate some specific ways by which morpheme meanings can be integrated to lexical meanings.we find that undirected disyllable compound words are referred by morpheme meanings,in part or in whole,activate some qualia structure roles or argument structure roles of the word meaning to respectively realize dual domain and single domain mapping.Then finally new meanings are formed.Specific chapters are arranged as follows:The first chapter is the introduction,in which we mainly introduces the current situation of the research on semantic word-formation in domestic and foreign circles.On the basis of previous studies,this paper makes a more detailed information annotation,which is in accordance with the needs of the research.Finally,three corpora are formed in order to make detailed semantic analysis and interpretation.The second chapter is semantic word-formation of nouns.Based on the theory of qulia structure and metaphor and metonymy,we studied the ways of nouns included in the corpus and find that the morpheme meaning,in whole or in part,act as a kind of qulia structure role of the word meaning,and make metaphor or metonymy.The third chapter is semantic word-formation of verbs.Based on the theory of argument structure and metaphor and metonymy,we studied the ways of verbs included in the corpus and found that the event of morpheme meaning is similar or related with the events of words’ meaning.Among them,for the v+n,a+n,n+n types,the interpretation of the qulia structure role of the noun morpheme,plays an important role in the interpretation of the verbs’ meaning.The fourth chapter is semantic word-formation of adjectives.Based on the theory of qulia structure and argument structure and metaphor and metonymy,we studies the ways of adjectives included in the corpus.For adjectives,their independence are less than verbs,mostly through nouns and verbs or through the description of things and events in the description of metaphor or metonymy.The fifth chapter is the comparative analysis of the three types of words.The mainpurpose of this study is to compare and analyze the tendency of the previous analysis.The sixth chapter is the conclusion,which explains the shortcomings of our study and future research directions.
