With the development of Volunteer Chinese Teacher Program in Thailand since2003,increasingly importance has been attached to Chinese learning.The teaching of Chinese in Thailand has been developing rapidly and receiving a fruitful result.But as an important part of Chinese teaching,Chinese Characters Teaching did not attract enough attention that it deserves,instead,it is even in a stagnant state.The author has made a research about the situation of Chinese characters teaching between volunteer Chinese teachers and Thai teachers in Uthai Thani Province,Thailand.Based on the understanding of the current situation and problems of Chinese characters teaching,this paper puts forward some suggestions on how to improve Chinese characters teaching,such as the “Primary Table of Chinese Characters for Thai Students”,“Chinese Characters First,Combination of Former Learning and Later Learning,Knowing More but Writing Less” teaching model and practical teaching strategies to help Thai students improve the level of Chinese characters,and promote the further development of Chinese characters teaching in Thailand classrooms.This paper is divided into five parts,including the introduction and the main body.In chapter one of introduction,the paper briefly introduces the reasons of the study,and then gives a brief summary about the research results of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Finally,the paper expatiates on the content,significance and methods of this study.In chapter two,the teaching environment of Chinese and Chinese characters in Thailand is summarized from two aspects: the background of Volunteer Chinese Teacher Program implementation and the promotion of Chinese characters in Thailand.Secondly,this chapter next makes a summary about the present situation of the Chinese characters teaching and problems occurring during the teaching progress in Uthai Thani in the perspectives as follows: the basic environment of Chinesecharacters teaching in Thailand,the situation of teaching materials and volunteer teachers,the attitudes of Thai teachers to Chinese characters,and Thai students’ learning condition of Chinese characters.In chapter three,regarding “to teach what” as the starting point of Chinese Character teaching,this paper constructs “Primary Table of Chinese Characters for Thai Students”,the teaching material that is suitable for Thai students,from the following five aspects: the principle of selecting characters,selecting qualitative and quantitative words,standards of selecting words,the method of selecting words and the final presentation of Chinese character table.In chapter four,according to the theory of Chinese characters and cognitive psychology,this chapter offers some related teaching strategies in the aspects of curriculum teaching mode,volunteer teachers and Hanban about how to deal with the relationship between Chinese characters and Chinese language,how to deal with the relationship between teachers and learners,and how to apply the current Chinese Character theories and teaching methods to the real situation of Chinese teaching.Meanwhile,this paper also proves the feasibility of the teaching strategies through a number of specific teaching cases.In chapter five,we give a test about the effect of Thai students’ Chinese Character learning and their basic attitudes towards Chinese Characters learning through the method of comparative analysis.The results show that the “Primary Table of Chinese Characters for Thai Students”,the course teaching mode of “Chinese Characters First,Combination of Former Learning and Later Learning,Knowing More but Writing Less” and the Chinese teaching strategies are much practical,which help remarkably boost students’ learning effect of Chinese characters.What is more,students’ interest and initiative of Chinese characters learning are obviously improved.
