Strategies For Translating Culture-specific Items In A History Of Seven Killings

When translating different works of different countries,we have to think about how to deal with the cultural elements,namely culture-specific items(CSIs).Spanish translator,Javier Franco Aixela,grouped eleven strategies of translating CSIs by analyzing three translated versions into Spanish from the English novel The Maltese Falcon.Meanwhile,he established four factors that may influence how translators choose certain strategies.In translating some chapters of A History Seven Killings,the author of this paper applied several strategies of Aixela's and summarized how to use them when dealing with CSIs.The author also noticed that when translating the novel from English to Chinese,some strategies can be effectively applicable if slightly modified.For instance,orthographic adaptation can be changed into transliteration.Besides,the author found out two or three strategies were adopted together to translate one CSI.
