| The report takes as translating materials the Canadian writer,a Nobel Prize winner,Alice Munro’s two stories entitled Forgiveness in Families and Winter Wind included in her new collection Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You.The first story relates somethings the heroine meets in her life because of her brother, who seems to have mental disease. When mother is at death’s door, her brother wants to save their mother by using an old method which is “witchcraft” in the eyes ofthe heroine. However, their mother’s illness takes a turn for the better until full recovery after using that old method. The second story relates the story of a girl who stays in the home of her grandmother in the countryside and wants to go back to her own home.Looking at the photo of grandmother at a young age with her parents and sisters, she was reminded of the grandmother’s and aunt Madge’s marriages. The writer often uses psychological realism and shapes the character’s image through psychological description. This translation report contains four parts. The first part is task description. It consists of the background and significance of this task. The second part describes translation process, includingthe preparation, the plan for the translation and problems after translation. The third part is case analysis. This part is the key of this report. It contains the problems in translation process and solutions to these problems. This part also includes the strategies used in translation process. The fourth part is conclusion summarizing the unresolved problems in the translation process and the inspiration for the future translation work. This practice enhances my translation capability and provides new material for the research about Alice Munro.Through this translation,I realize that a translator need to have rich cultural knowledge and professional knowledge. The translation strategies and skills should remain flexible in translation process.A translator should have full preparation and adequate analysis of the original text before translation. |
