Research On Harmony Of Fifth Movement For Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky

Prokofiev is a famous Soviet Union composer and pianist in the end of 19th century and the start of the 20th century.His creation is divided into three periods:The early period from 1907-1918 during his study in Petersburg Music Academy;The middle period from 1918-1933 during his foreign residence and tour;The late period from 1933-1953 when he went back to Soviet.Among them,each of his creative stages has its own different styles and innovative thinking.Especially at the later stage of composing,most of his works involve war,this duly embodies his patriotism national character creation features.Cantata Alexander Nevsky is one of his great works of this period.This Cantata work is originally the background music of a movie,the background music is assumed by Prokofiev.The fifth movement is Battle On The Ice,the work tells Russia army's fight against the Crusades under the valiant direction of Alexander Nevsky in detail.The whole Cantata is divided into 7 movements,the fifth movement Battle On The Ice is at the key developing position in the whole work.From the ice lake war" we can see that although Prokofiev was a modern composer in the twentieth century,he still used a lot of traditional chord material,harmony and tone of creative thinking.Also,he fully absorbed the Russian folk music material to create works.At the same time,he also flexibly used the harmony material to break the tradition and multi tonality and other twentieth century harmony techniques.As the song was adapted from the music of the same name film,in order to make the soundtrack and the film screen synchronization,the film director will inevitably do some deletion and interception in the selection of music.Therefore,in the process that Prokofiev makes up the film soundtrack to Cantata genre,he paid attention to maintain and strengthen the integrity of the whole song structure.From the structure,this thesis is divided into four chapters:the first chapter mainly introduces Prokofiev's life and the Cantata;the second chapter conducts harmony research on the leitmotiv used in the fifth movement;the third chapter researches on the harmony materials of the fifth movement and their mutual relation;the forth chapter researches on the harmony technology overall features of movement five and their relationship with musical expression.This thesis tries to conduct harmonic technique detailed analysis on the fifth movement,explore and extract Prokofiev's harmony creation features:inheriting tradition and innovating on this basis.Meanwhile,it conducts initial exploration and research on his technical and artistic processing made in movie background music and Cantata.Through the concrete analysis of the harmony material of this movement,we can see that in the use of harmony techniques,Prokofiev not only inherited tradition in the chord material-a large number of adoption of three-dimensional structure of the chord and its variants,altered chord etc.,but also made innovation in the use of phonetic chords produced by the complex structure of chords and other forms.In the chord progression,he adopts both the traditional functional harmony progression and various-colors harmony progression,such as the third degree harmony progression and a variety of continuous harmony progression,parallel progression and so on.Prokofiev both inherited the tradition and made bold innovationin in the use of harmony techniques in this movement,depicting this ancient battle in the thirteenth century with blood and bone.
