With the trend of economic globalization,English is playing an increasingly important role in international communication.Accordingly,English textbooks,as one of the most important sources of English knowledge,are of catholic concern.In recent years,with the continuous development of constructivism and its application in the field of education and teaching,constructivism has attracted more and more scholars and researchers' attention.In contrast to its frequent study and application in the teaching field,the analysis of textbooks under constructivism is relatively rare so it is of significance both in theory and in practice.In view of the above situation,this thesis takes New College English Integrated Course as the research object.The author intends to study New College English Integrated Course under the perspective of constructivism with qualitative and quantitative research methods.Firstly,based on constructivist theories and constructivist view of textbook proposed by previous studies,the author summarizes and refines the compiling principles of textbook under the perspective of constructivism.Then,the author selects Volume 1-4 of New College English Integrated Course to make internal and external assessments.Both internal and external evaluations are respectively in terms of five aspects:format design,objectives,the selection of textbook,the arrangement of textbook content,the implementation of textbook;Through internal evaluation,the author elaborates status quo of New College English Integrated Course objectively via the compiling principles of textbooks mentioned above.With external evaluation,the author investigates whether New College English Integrated Course meets the requirements of students and teachers,and how they conceive of every aspect of this textbook on the basis of questionnaire and interview results.Finally,in light of internal and external evaluation of New College English Integrated Course,the author studies the disadvantages and advantages of New College English Integrated Course.Evaluation results show that New College English Integrated Course basically meets the requirement of teachers and students.Format design of textbook is clear and appropriate,facilitating teaching and learning.The objectives of textbook concentrate on students' meaning construction and abilities development.The organization of textbook attaches much attention to students' positive transition of knowledge and takes situational and social points of textbooks into full consideration.The implementation of textbook respects students'subjectivity and facilitates students' autonomous learning.However,there still exist some deficiencies with regard to this textbook,such as irrelevance among illustrations,tables and unit themes,disequilibrium between the introductions of foreign culture and native culture,loose connection among unit themes and the like.Based on the above research,the author puts forward relevant suggestions on how to optimize New College English Integrated Course in terms of textbook compilers,teachers and students.
