A Study On Feng Tang's Translation Of Stray Birds—From The Persective Of Nord's Model Of Translation Criticism

The thesis utilizes Christiane Nord's model of translation criticism to treat the controversial Feng Tang's translation of Stray Birds as a whole.On the basis of adequate information retrieved for the source text and the target text,the thesis,combining the translation brief which makes requests for the translator,offers a description and criticism of the target text,and attempts to explain why this translated version of Stray Birds has been off the shelves.Nord's model of translation criticism is one that is centered on the model of text analysis under the guidance of skopos theory.Based on the analysis of editorial reviews and translator's postscript of the translated text of Stray Birds,the thesis reconstructs the translation brief—producing a modern Chinese translation of Tagore's Stray Birds in the poetic form which evokes aesthetic pleasures.On this basis,the thesis analyzes the intratextual factors,extratextual factors and effects of both the source text and the target text.The thesis finds out that Feng's translation does not violate the translation brief and is not inadequate.Besides,it exhibits creativity on the aspects of lexis and sentence structure.However,the eight controversial poems have different degrees of violating the rule of “intratextual coherence”,and are thus regarded representative of his translation and have directly led the paper book edition to be off the shelves.The thesis proves that in poetry translation,fulfilling the translation skopos does not guarantee the achievement of desired effects.The thesis also suggests that a “badly” translated poem has more impact than a “well” translated poem in judging the quality of a translated poem collection.
