Study On The Elder Image In The Novels Of Tang Dynasty And Five Dynasties

Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties novels had great development during the three hundred and fifty years.Novels of Tang Dynasty were the first time to create novels consciously and paid attention to literary and imaging,which had circumlocutory stories and vivid images.People have much attention and discussion about it,having a lot of achievements.But so far,it is a great pity that the images of the old are seldom concerned.In this paper,I hope to do something in this to respect the gleaning of work.As different definitions of novel in academia anthology,this paper is based on the principle of "comprehensive,no omissions" to collect many images of the old in collection of novels and fiction anthology.Hereby,this article attempts to analyze the elder image deeply from the cause,the types,and significance.Part one is mainly to analyze the causes from three aspects: firstly,due to the prevalence of Buddhism and Taoism in the tang dynasty,and inherent concept of ghosts and gods,the monk,the Taoist,ghosts and gods appear as the elder frequently.Secondly,influenced deeply by the Chinese traditional wisdom culture,there are many old men with wisdom in novels.Also,the Tang Dynasty advocate the system of hereditary aristocracy and the filial piety,and parents lay emphasis on status causing a lot of love tragedy.As for this,many love tragedies emerged at the right moment.Part two is mainly to classify the images of old man in the literature: Intelligent type,Spell type,Secular type,and then to analyze each type concretely.For instance,the old with wisdom will make someone an immortal and can foresee unpredictable fates.The old cast high and mysterious spells.Secular parents have own love and strict,and so on.Through longitudinal contact of the images in the novels before and after Tang Dynasty,this part will analyze the succession and development of this image.Finally,it mainly discusses the characteristics from three aspects of the elder in the novels.Such as,the old always appear in mountain caves;they have holy and common two sides on morphology;their whereabouts is wandering,and so on.The defects show on the symbolization of image and the imbalance of gender.
