The Bird Images In The Novels Of Tang And Five Dynasties

Bird is a very important part of Chinese traditional culture,which has appeared in literary texts since the beginning of literature.The images of birds in literary works have different manifestations in works of different genres,and in the novels of the Tang and Five Dynasties,which are the beginning of the prosperity of narrative literature,the images of birds have achieved greater development and progress in terms of their meanings and functions,what is more important is the literary,political and social significance behind these new changes.The main body of the paper is divided into three chapters.The second chapter discusses the origin of bird image in literature,and analyzes the performance of bird in the representative works of different periods in order of time to show the process of bird image from scratch.From the totem worship of the ancestors to the myth of “Magic bird”or“Strange Bird”,the archetype of bird image in literary works was thus born.In the tradition of poetry and Sao,the bird images of Bi Xing and Bi De were used to give birth to the embryonic form of “Moral symbols”.In the ancient novels before the Tang dynasty,the bird image gradually developed to the literature form from the close to the myth to the real life,but not yet separated from the moralized expression form.The third chapter discusses the development of the bird image in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties by comparing with the bird image in the novels before Tang dynasty.The images of birds in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties are more aesthetic and poetic than before,and they have more meanings and human feelings.This is the great progress and development of the bird image in the narrative literature,which provides a larger scope for the later novels to choose the bird image and has a far-reaching impact on the narrative literature after the Tang dynasty.The fourth chapter analyzes the reason why the bird image developed and changed in the novels of Tang Dynasty and five dynasties.The development of bird images in the novels of the Tang and Five Dynasties is not only a gradual process from the initial understanding of birds in ancient China to the enrichment of their cultural connotations,at the same time,it is also the development process of the cognition of the relationship between human,nature and society in Chinese traditional culture,in which various cultural elements participate,promote and guide,including the direct promotion of literary ideas,literary theories,novel styles,the progress of popular literature and the literary environment,as well as the influence of the political and educational aspects of the Tang dynasty,such as the national strength,the imperial examination system and the shogunate system,as well as Buddhism,Taoism and other religious culture’s participation influence.
