The Representation Of Chinese Ethnic Minorities In NhK’s Documentaries

As Japan’s largest public broadcasting organization,NHK(Nippon Hoso Kyokai)bears a very high popularity worldwide,and the documentaries filmed by which can be even more influential.NHK has paid close attention to China,thus a large number of China-related history and culture documentaries have been filmed and broadcasted,which also touch upon Chinese ethnic minorities.The upsurge of NHK’s documentaries in Chinese ethnic minorities should be dated back to the 1980 s,when its documentaries on culture and geography started to introduce the unknown regions and unusual culture of China to the outside world.After the mysterious masks of the ethnic minorities had been unveiled,NHK’s documentaries which focus on the Chinese ethnic minorities began to become increasingly pluralism.The “BS World Documentary” is a documentary program broadcasted by NHK’s BS1 TV station,which gathers material from countries and regions all over the world.From this point of view,it could be regarded as a window through which NHK uses to observe the globe.In this paper,the author targets the documentaries of NHK’S “BS World Documentary” programin the latest 10 years,which feature Chinese ethnic minorities,as her object of study to analyze the formulation adopted by the 6 documentaries to view the Chinese ethnic minorities.Firstly,the author analyzes the repretation of ethnic minorities through their daily life and celebrating their festivals as well as religious activities in the documentaries.Afterwards,the author summarizes the formulation of the documentaries and uses the concept of modernity to connect the analysis of before,and discovers that some kind of pattern as well as hidden power relationship is existed.Based on the above-mentioned study,it is concluded that in the NHK’s documentaries,its formulation of Chinese minorities is established on the foundation of the actual situation of the two countries.Tradition and modern is the main narrative structure,of which the former one is related to the ethnic minorities without exception.Besides,the author also finds out that comparing to Chinese ethnic minorities films,utterance appealing for national identity and ethnic unity has weakened obviously,conflicts and peace among ethnics have both been reflected in the documentaries,positive China national image is coexisting with the negative.The Chniese films of ethnic minorities can also learn from the experience of it.
