Translation Report On The Road To A Modern IT Factory Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

The source text,The Road to a Modern IT Factory,chiefly introduces the up-to-date information technology and management knowledge to readers.According to Newmark’s classification of the text types,it belongs to the informative type.Therefore,the translator adopts Newmark’s communicative translation theory for the translation progress,hoping to convey the content of source text truthfully and completely and produce on readers an effect as close as that obtained on the original readers.The content of The Road to a Modern IT Factory includes sourcing strategies,people management during transformation,optimizing procurement portfolios,supplier management,etc.The main purpose of informative text is to transmit information and discuss whys and wherefores of a matter.Therefore,the translation strategy adopted is reader-adaptability from the knowledge level,which means the translator uses the well-known and succinct words and phrases to provide readers with sufficient information.In translating technical terms,the translator translates them accurately and strictly to satisfy readers’ requirements of reading.If a term has many translation versions,the translator will choose the most frequently used one in IT industry.In translating passive voice,the translator usually transforms the passive voice in English into the active voice in Chinese so as to conform to the Chinese custom.The characteristics of the EST(namely English for Science and Technology)are to state facts and describe the process.Besides,the text features long sentences with a lot of modifiers,attributive parts and supplementary parts.There are two methods for translating the long sentence from English into Chinese: the first method is to translate based on syntactic linearity from English into Chinese if the description order in English is similar with that in Chinese;and the second is to use the inverse translation method if the sentence structure in English is different from that in Chinese.This translation report aims at introducing new IT industry technologies and management to managers in IT industry.Meanwhile,other translators can getreference value of choosing translation strategy and applying translation methods for similar work from this report.
